Pack in sightseeing, hiking, spelunking, and wine tasting on this day trip to Mount Etna. Take advantage of a full day spent visiting the largest live volcano in Europe: climb as far up the mountain as you’d like, explore a lava cave, and visit a local winery. From Rifugio Sapienza, choose to hike or take a cable car and off-road minibus to journey farther up the mountain. Don’t stress about getting to and from Etna, and end the day with a platter of local food and wines.
What to Expect
Your day begins with a pickup from your hotel, port, or train station in Catania, after which you get on the road for the roughly hour-long journey to Rifugio Sapienza. Take advantage of stops at a few viewpoints by snapping photos of the volcano and surrounding countryside.

Make your way up to Rifugio Sapienza while your guide tells you about the history and geology of the volcano. Visit the sites of recent eruptions and the Silvestri Craters.

Upon arrival at Sapienza, choose to trek to an altitude of roughly 6562 feet (2000 meters) by Parco dell’Etna nature trails, or reach 9514 feet (2900 meters) by cable car and 4X4 minibus, where you stop at the Torre del Filosofo and the great southeast crater. Please note that the cable car, 4x4 minibus, and alpine guided needed to reach 9514 feet are an extra cost.

Then, make your way back down the mountain and don helmets and wield flashlights to explore a lava cave.

Next, visit a winery to sample sparkling and local wines with cheese, cured meat, and local olive oil. Finally, head back to Catania, where you’re dropped off at your original departure point.

great guides

This tour was great but wish we could have went further up mountain. Also the cave part was rather comical. Don't expect much in regards to that. The wine tasting was really nice. The owner was very hospitable to our group.
