Rome Catacombs and San Clemente Underground Small-Group Tour

Overview

When it comes to discovering Rome’s underground, the right guide makes all the difference. Your leader on this small-group tour is an art historian who knows Rome and its underbelly backwards. Perfect for anyone who loves to escape the beaten path, they’ll lead you through the underside of the Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano and the eerie Catacombs of Domitilla.

What to Expect

Greet your guide and small group at the Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano, a beautiful Romanesque church. Descend 60 feet (18 meters) below the ground to see the layers that lie beneath: a 4th-century church and an ancient Roman house.

Hop aboard your comfortable vehicle for the short journey to the Catacombs of Domitilla, a maze of tunnels where ancient Christians buried their dead, which wind underground for 11 miles (18 kilometers). See a 4th-century underground basilica and early Christian wall paintings, and learn about early Christian life.

Finally, walk on ancient Rome’s most famous road, the Ancient Appian Way (Via Appia Antica).

Great Tour

Paul was fantastic, very knowledgeable, explained everything. You travel 3 to 4 stories below San Clemente into a world dating back 15 centuries or more. Then you travel by bus to more catacombs out along the Appian Way. Fascinating, time well spent.

Informative Tour

Christiana, an experienced archeologist, was our tour guide. She has worked excavating the catacombs and her knowledge base was extensive. The tour was well worth the money. I highly recommend The Roman Guy and Christiana.

Group tour

Fascinating tour. See the catacombs where tens of thousands were once entombed. Not beautiful by Sistine Chapel standards but should be seen as an essential, unique part of Roman and Christian history.More
