Great tour of Avila and Segovia
This full day tour was well narrated in both English and Spanish. Manolo, our guide, repeated everything exactly in both languages. He was extremely knowledgeable about the cities and their character. The tour was paced well. We had a very good sense of both cities and never felt rushed. We saw everything as promised and had time to explore Segovia on our own after lunch. It was a great day out, and we were fortunate to have fantastic weather. I highly recommend this tour as an excursion from Madrid.

Snails walk faster than the guide
First off Segovia and Ávila were beautiful and are a must see. Just consider which company you use and Julia Travel seals plus but this guide, who’s name was never given, was not very good. She did provide information but time management was awful mostly because she walked very very slowly as if she were taking a leisurely stroll down the beach. This resulted in very little time at the sites to take pictures. 3 times we had to walk fast to catch up after talking pictures because she would stay for 1 minute and move on (luckily she walked so slow it was easy to catch up). We did spend a nice amount of time in the Segovia castle but in Ávila we only had one hour and we spent 20 minutes of that looking at a small church and a finger. Then 30 minutes walking through the streets.

Very disappoints because the cities were very pretty but we didn’t have enough time for anything. Tour started 30 minutes late which didn’t help.

Lunch was decent but took 90 minutes and had to pay extra for drinks. For $100 each I should get a coke or bottle of water with my meal.

Summary, see Ávila, see Segovia, consider doing it yourself or using a different company.

Dear scroberts09, Firstly I would like to apologise that the tour to Avila and Segovia did not meet your expectations. Kindly take note that we strive to provide an outstanding service and make sure that our tours are informative and interesting with enough time to get to know the places we visit. I am deeply sadden that you felt that you did not spent sufficient time at some of the points of interest and could not fully enjoy them, however it is satisfying to learn that you could spend a nice amount of time at the Segovia castle. We will transfer your comments to the corresponding department in order to improve the quality of the service provided to the customer. Sincerely, Alex B.

"Turn Right Here"
Dec 2019
I took this tour on December 17, 2019. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the guide, or whether she even gave it to us, but the date should act as reference for the tour company. My family and I have taken many tours of cities around the world, including one just the day before with this same company to Toledo that was thankfully the complete opposite of this "memorable" experience. I have never seen a guide so lazy in their responsibilities. Easily, any of us could have gotten up and taken the job as it was completely summed up in directions "turn right there, turn left here" and time calls "20 minutes until we leave." Despite the almost 100 dollar cost per person, there was no information disseminated for any of the sites. The famous Roman Aqueduct? Nothing! All I know about it is that in 2019 it's the meeting place for Julia Travel tour groups after the 1 and a half hour lunch. The Segovia cathedral? Only about 10 minutes inside, barely enough time for blinking mental pictures. The Alcazar? "Look up. The ceilings are beautiful." Direct quote from the guide, and the only quote of substance within the alcazar. Even during the walking tour portions in between sites, it was mostly walking without any thoughtful information on what we were seeing, minus the stating of the obvious. For example, we'd walk and there would be an old building with a sign outside reading "16th century palace," and the guide in all her wisdom would let us know that it was, indeed, a "16th-century palace." If you do decide to take this tour with this particular guide, make sure there are no nice scenes to take photos of in these picturesque, well-preserved quaint historic villages. If there are, and you temporarily stop for a photo, the guide will leave you behind so that she can get to the next 16th-century palace to obviously point out what everybody can read. In the convent of Saint Teresa in Avila, where the saint's finger is preserved as a relic, we had about 2 minutes to see it and the inside of the church dedicated in her memory.

It is a shame, because these cities contain history and stories that we were all excited to learn about, and that we paid a lot of money per person to know. As a matter of fact, this particular tour was one we were looking forward to because of many friends had told us about these sites. However, the guide's careless behavior ruined this experience. I look back at these cities with a bad taste in my mouth, mostly because I don't know anything about them. She has no passion for her work, and no knowledge more than what you read on the description on this site. You will not have time to take photos or to barely admire the marvels in front of you. You will leave with a superficial knowledge on everything, and forgetting more than half of what you saw the second you exit the bus. It feels more like a race to check off the itinerary than to actually appreciate the architecture and history. It was a joke tour completely unlike any of the others that we took during our almost four months in Europe.

On our next portion of the trip, we visited Portugal and took two tours there with different companies, each visiting more cities, which felt less rushed than this one, and we now have a richer understanding of what we saw. We also took a walking tour where for three hours, we and our guide were under Tropical Storm Elsa winds and rain, and yet he never stopped giving us information on the city and its history.

Meanwhile, this guide spent most of her time reminding us that the next turn was right.

Dear sms0315, Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review on our tour to Ávila and Segovia. First of all, I would like to point out that the time available on this tour is very tight taking into account the distance between these two cities, and with Madrid as well. Please, kindly take into account that there is a timing established for the tour that needs to be followed in order to guarantee the visit and explanation of everything included in the program. Secondly, please note that unfortunately it is not possible to stop for photo opportunities or explain some things found in the way to the main points of interest since it would make those visits even shorter. I deeply regret your expectations for the tour were not met. Nevertheless, I would like to thank again the comments provided on the tour, since these are our greatest source of information to adapt the excursion to the needs of our customers. I hope you had a pleasant stay in Madrid. Best regards, Alex B.

Big bus tour with small group feel.
Oct 2019
Normally I prefer a small group tour to the big bus outing, but as it is so late in the tourism season Julia Travel was my only option to see Avila and Segovia. I really was worried about being lost in a huge group but it never felt that way.

Fortunately our tour was lead by separate Spanish and English guides, (apparently this depends on the time of year). This divided the large group on the bus almost equally, shrinking the size.

Julie uses a RF Transmitter mic for the guide and very unobtrusive earpieces for the guests. This made it so I could always hear our guide, even when I was trailing behind.

Our guide was great, providing pertinent information and color about everything we were seeing. The walking pace was moderate and never did I feel like we were speed walking to the next site. Our guide was also very careful with our path through the towns, making sure we were aware of vehicles and other dangers.

The only thing I can say that would be a negative is that I wish we had a little more time at the Avila wall and Segovia Aqueduct. Other than that it was a great tour that I am happy I went on.

Highlight of our Madrid trip!!
Oct 2019
Fantastic trip to Segovia and Avila with a knowledgeable guide. We saw all the sights we wanted to see and had free time to eat and shop a bit as well. Our bus had about 40 travelers that they split into English speaking and Spanish speaking groups. Our English speaking guide was easy to understand and knowledgeable but also knew when to be quiet and let you enjoy on your own. We skipped the lunch option and ate on our own so we controlled the time available to see the aqueduct in Segovia and do a little shopping. It was perfect and the guide was clear on location and meeting times so you could skip portions based on your interests. All tickets to sights were included. Bus was clean and comfortable (new). Great trip--really the highlight of our trip.

Avila and Segovia day tour
Oct 2019
Beatrix/Betty was an exceptional guide who shared her extensive knowledge with enthusiasm, she was friendly easy to understand her spoken English also her explanations and timing were very good. The Tapas Lunch was disappointing in Segovia in fact had I known it would have been better to decline this and arrange own lunch at one of the many cafes or restaurants near the Aqueduct or near the Cathedral. Thank you Julia Travel.
