The transfer to Montserrat by bus and guided tour were perfect. The guide gave recommendations and explained aspects of Montserrat in the lives of Catalunya. My recommendation would be to take the train to Montserrat and then the funicular to the top of the mountain ranges, on reaching the monastery area. Take a good 4-5 hours to explore the area, without the travel time. Also, taking a guided tour is recommended definitely. There is an art museum with pieces from Dali, Picasso, Monet, Renoir and so on. Definitely recommended visiting that.

You can never call a trip to Barcelona complete, without a visit to De Montserrat monastery. It was an amazing & serene experience on my visit. Started by train with a return ticket from Placa Espaniya to Montesrrat, then switch to rail rack train to the monastery with a return ticket or one has an option of cable car also.
From the monastery, one can take the funicular train ride to reach further heights of Sant Joan, from where you can experience a truly exhilarating trek! And the best experience would be to walk down from the Sant Joan back to monastery.

This location is about an hour outside of Barcelona via the bus, the tour guide was informative and gave great advice on what things we should see. But gave us plenty of time to see everything. The sights alone are worth the trip there!

The morning visit did not give enough time to see the madona, museum and video as they all opened at around 10 AM. They get you there around 8:30. The tour was somewhat chaotic at times. It was not all in English and seem to be in Spanish half the time. If you want to do some hiking, book a full day there.

Dear client, we are sorry that you had the feeling that there was not enough time. Is true that the Museum opens at 10h but the Virgin Throne is open since 8h am. In total we give you 3 hours in Montserrat, having the meeting to go back to Barcelona at 11:30h, what gives you 1h30m to visit the Museum. We have different options, so our clients can choose the one that fits better their expectations. We offer an option where the guided visit is not included, so it gives you three hours of free time. If you prefered to go hiking, that would have been your option. In the option that includes the guided visit, we explain the history of the place in around one hour that it is what it takes to do the guided tour, and then give you the rest of the time free to explore the area. We know that this is the perfect time to know well Montserrat and then have the afternoon free in Barcelona. We hope to see you soon in other of our tours

This is an excellent place to visit, if you have an extra day in Barcelona. Lot of people think that they should take organize tours to this place. But you have very good transport system to reach the place. There is a day pass that can be used in MRT, Train, and Cable car. Most of the tour companies on the street can sell this pass. When you are on your own you can spend time leisurely and explore the place at your own phase.

Thought I was crazy to put myself to wake up at 5.30am to prep for this tour which starts at 6.30amui. An imagine this is my Shore excursion and I have to travel 5km to the meeting point. Took the cab sharing cabify which pick me up at the cruise port and cost me about 10euro.
The tour was excellent with a Spanish/English tourist guide. Now this early access hardship is worth it .... Almost no traffic on the road and at Monserret. We had finished our tour when the tourist crowd start pouring in. How nice to enjoy the place in the quietness of the early morning.

DO the early access tour if you want to see this beautiful, incredible Monastery. IT is so worth getting up a bit early. We met in front of the Hard Rock Restaurant(630a) in Plaza De Catalunya(VERY central and easy to find/a taxis and bus hub). The Tour guide and a small group(about 15 of us) loaded a tour bus for the short trip up the mountain-we heard a little about Barcelona as we traveled to the mountain(about 45+min). IT is stunning as you drive up the side of the mountain thru the clouds to this beautiful place. So peaceful and serene. We were the first bus to arrive in a VERY large, empty parking lot! We were given adequate time to take photos as the sun started to rise over the Monastery/mountain range!. It can be windy and chilly there(probably a 20+ degree difference from the city so prepare/take a hat or scarf if winter or cooler season). Once the sun is up it does warm up quickly. The tour was quick and efficient. We saw and heard the history of the Monastery, several of the inner chambers as well as the beautiful Black Madonna. Remember this is a functioning Monastery, be courteous. Watch the flashes on the camera, hats, watch your voices and be cognizant! This facility is STUNNING inside. It is under some construction/restoration so some things are obstructed/covered BUT not much. There are several coffee shops and restaurants as well as gift shops and an Information office/PostOffice. We missed the boys choir but if this really interests you check the Monastery's guide as to when services are being held. They do sing during services daily I believe. We were done by 820-830 with the actual tour so we took more photos while waiting for the Mountain Cable car to open to hoist us to the very top! At 950 they start to sell tickets so get in line! It does cost-minimal fee. We got round trip tickets because we wanted to hike a little at the top(St Joan chapel -stunning and breath taking views) before "hurrying" down to meet our tour which left at 1140a timely) for return to Barcelona. There is the one way up ticket option on the cable car but then you can hike down to the Monastery central parking area along a well paved path/road. This is approx an hour or more so "hurry" a bit if on the tour. A farmer's market is set up near the parking lot so brows there for cheese, items. All the venders have about the same things so dont bunch up at the near ones, walk on by to the less busy ones further down the line! Another option to get to Montserrat: There is a train from Barcelona to Montserrat city where you can then take a Railway or Cable car up to the Monastery IF you want to do this on your own time. I always prefer to pay for a tour and HEAR the history and information about a region I am visiting! Also when we were leaving at 1145a the HUGE parking lot was at capacity and people were parking way down the drive!! GO early!!! Peace and quiet without the competition and pushing of "tourists" with no manners. We were back in the city by 1300 to still have time to explore this FABULOUS city more.
There is a hotel on the grounds and this would be a fabulous place to stay for quiet, star gazing and medication. You can hike and enjoy the peace once the visitors leave.

Friends
The tour was worth it just to get there early. I have never been to any touristy location where early arrival was so worth it. We arrived at 8 and it was empty - by 11 you could barely move it was so crowded, even with crappy weather. Our experience suffered a bit because of the weather - not our guide's fault, but she was forced to adapt to the fools in our group who inexplicably paid zero attention to the weather forecast practically guaranteeing rain. I would have like to hear more details about the basilica itself from the inside - I didn't realize our tour did not include this. I highly recommend just coming home on your own, it is quite easy (our tour guide was wrong about how to do it, but there are English-speaking conductors who'll give your perfect advice; ticket machines in English too) and takes basically the same amount of time as driving and there are a lot of things worth seeing and doing that this tour does not include enough time for. If you are staying to see the boys choir, get there EARLY (our guide told us 12:45 if we wanted a seat; we came in at 12:35 and it was already so packed we were 4 rows deep standing - useless once the cameras come out to record).

So where do i even begin... We booked the early access to montserrat through tripadvisor. We showed up at 7:15 outside Hard Rock Cafe all exicted and expecting an epic journey. Then we waited....and waited...and nothing. Our tour guide never showed up! Between ourselves and the bus driver, no one could contact anyone from Amigo tours. Time went by and still nothing. When it came closer to 8:30 and with the permission of the driver's office, we all decided it would be better to go on by ourselves and see from there. On the bus ride there were numerous people calling their offices. The only news we ever heard back from Amigo tours was through the driver - in which they promised to give us a refund.
When we finally got to Monserrat there were alreadt numerous buses there and lines were already formed to go see the Madonna and for the Funicular. Therefore, it was not at all an early access.
Also, we weren't given any tickets to enter any of the areas we bought for, as they were supposed to be provided by Amigo Tours. Luckily for us we had proof of purchase with us so the lovely staff at Monserrat let us do some of the things promised.
Finally, because we left so late we couldn't enjoy the beauty of Monserrat for as long as we wanted.
We are very dissapointed with this setup and we will never book anything with Amigo Tours again.

It was a last minute decision to take this tour, but turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Although the early start is tough, it is ultimately worth it as you get to see the beautiful sunrise as you travel toward Montserrat and avoid the large crowds that show up throughout the day.
Marioneta (apologies for the spelling!) was fantastic. She gave us a great little outline of Barcelona as we drove to Montserrat, let us rest due to the early hour and we even managed to grab a quick breakfast on the way. She was so friendly and open to questions, a really fantastic guide, and gave us background on the political situation in Catalonia (at our request) - it was very interesting to get the perspective of a local. The Monastery is stunning, and we even got to see the boys' choir taking their back to school photo! I would recommend taking the zipper up to the top of the mountain and hiking a bit, it offers a stunning view.

I want to buy the Montserrat+Museum Summer Tour 06:45 for $ 54.00 in Oct 4 and how much time we stay in the Montserrat? Some people on the review said about 2 hours and some said only 1 hour. I will like to see the Museum. What time will the tour bus return back? I know we can come back by train, Is it hard to buy the train tickets? Thank you for your help!
This option includes the transport, the guided visit, the tickets to Monastery's Museum and a licor tasting. This options operates in summer and leaves at 6:45h

Hi. I have the exact same question! I am going to be there October 18th and was thinking of taking the shuttle up but taking the train back as 1-2 hours there doesn't seem like much time. Will you let me know if you hear anything?
Thanks

Hi. The description of the early access tours states transportation leaves Barcelona at 6:45 in the morning during summer. Will the 6:45 departure time also be in effect in October? Thanks.

I have not found any information about schedules in the fall. I think it's pretty much the same unless they change it but they will let you know or the website updated. Any questions you may email the travel agency. 06:45 is a good time of departure from Barcelona to Montserrat if you are concerned about it being too early or late. Remember to be at the meeting point at least 15 - 20 minutes early (don't forget to snack a little before the trip). The Monastery and Basilica gets crowded when you are about to leave at 10:25am back to Barcelona. You will have a good time to pray and touch the Black Madonna without a long line (careful in taking up the stairs as it is a little dark). We did not opt to join the wine tasting etc so we had the Black Madonna time for ourselves and pray at the crypt and take some photos. God bless.

All the six options I see state that it doesn't include ticket access to the monastery, but the description of the tour says that it includes skip the line tickets.
Which ticket option do I need to select to access the monastery in June?

We just bought the Early Morning Access Tour without buying any separate Access Ticket to the monastery. The tour guide gave us a very good tour of the Cathedral & the Black Madonna. We walked all over the monastery, shopping, coffee etc. We did pay a few Euro to see an audio/visual presentation about the place inside the gift shop.

Yes, they explained that on the bus on the way up. You are free to get back on your own, just tell the guide when you get up there.
How long do you have at the Monastery? Is there a line to buy entrance tickets once you get to Montserrat?

Being the first ones there is soo great. No lines the ticket you buy is all arranged by the company. The light is magic. We left Barcelona at 6.30 I think had to stop for a coffee to allow sun to rise just as we parked. Did not get back on bus till 1230 1pm approx. great tour. Plenty time for Montserrat and a short walk. If you are planning the long walks around Montserrat you will have to get your own way home. Recommended.

It was after 1PM. BTW, you will not be able to see the Boys Choir perform, but will have ample time to look around and explore. The best reason to go early is to see and touch the Madonna's orb before the crowds arrive.
