About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- I9176BUclaired0 contributionsClaire Davis- AMAZING TIMECarl is AMAZING. After many privately guided tours I can confidently say that Carl is the best guide we’ve ever had. He is kind, personable, and full of knowledge. He catered our experience from those who don’t like wine regularly to those who love it, and did so seamlessly. Everyone in our party had an amazing time and would come back to Germany just to hang out with him.Written 10 July 2024
- PDST0 contributionsUniworld is no longer our first choiceWe've done this cruise two times before (prior to Covid) and it was excellent with Uniworld. This year we decided to introduce our family to Uniworld - big mistake! This trip started off in Amsterdam with a Uniworld Rep, Jacqueline who had little communication with anyone, The hotel was to far away from city centre, the canal cruise was a joke - repeated same commentary three or four times, Ridiculous amount of money for a bad beginning to our trip. (You could do this a lot cheaper on your own). The cruise on the SS Victoria was okay - however, to call it Castles Along the Rhine - again ridiculous. The commentary used to be so interesting but now there is very little and quite honestly boring . The cable car ride in Boppard was not worth doing and again, not at all up to our expectations when compared to previous trips! The Cruise Manager was useless - again not up to the standards that have always been expected with Uniworld. The only redeeming factor was our post-cruise extension in Lucerne - the Uniworld Rep, Maria was excellent. Having done 14 trips with this company, I would have to say that either they are under new management or they just don't care anymore. Fortunately, there are lots of other cruise companies in Europe to choose from. However; I should point out that the restaurant, Lounge & Housekeeping staff were very good and because of them, they get 3 stars. The Cruise Mgr. would get 0. The S S Victoria - definitely not as good as any of their other ships. We had originally booked this on the River Queen and Uniworld changed it. We complained at the time, but they didn't offer to let us change to a trip the Queen was doing.Written 7 June 2024
- O8799IVwilliamc0 contributionsBest wine tourCarl’s tour of the Mosel was the best wine tour we have experienced. He was a wonderful host, providing snacks and treats upon arrival and in between stops. He is very knowledgeable, and through the tastings that he arranged , he was able to demystify German Riesling for us. He exposed us to both a larger more established producer and a smaller “garage” style producer (we tasted wine in a shed with the owner – who hand labeled bottles for us). Carl also arranged a lovely lunch in a beautiful river front restaurant with an amazing bottle of wine. Overall a fantastic experienceWritten 3 May 2023
- NCcatpeople0 contributionsA Perfect Tour of the MoselThe day spent with Carl driving us through the beautiful Mosel Valley was beyond perfect. Carl was very attuned to our likes in Riesling wines and worked in wineries and even a special treat at lunch that matched these likes. He picked us up at Mainz Train Station and had excellent breakfast breads. The first winery we went to was a small one on the banks of the Mosel, but the owner (- 12?? generation ) took all of the time in the world to let us taste over 20 wines as we compared flavors and notes. We explained how in the US we don't get find older Rieslings, and were treated to some special older samples. We then visited a winery high on the hills overlooking a bend in the Mosel and enjoyed more wines. Lunch was simple but very tasty with a special treat of a 48 year old Riesling! Carl also made stops for photo ops and the one we both love is the photo Carl took of us under the Piesporter Goldtropfchen sign. We served wine from the vineyard at our wedding. Bottom line, just book a tour with Carl, you will be SOOO happy you did!Written 30 April 2023
- Peter M0 contributionsHeidelberg CastleI did not go on the wine and cruising along the vines but only visited the Heidelberg Castle but could find Heidelberg Castle by itself! This is a ruin and a landmark in Heidelberg. The castle has been partially rebuilt since its demolition in the 1600s and 1700s. It is 260 feet up the Konigstubl mountain. It was built before 1214 and expanded into two castles in 1597, but a lightning bolt destroyed one castle in 1597.Written 13 January 2023
- ldtc20 contributionsObviously You Are There So…We were there as part of a tour. All guides were dressed in costumes. It was live narration and informative but I think you have to be “ into” that sort of thing. Great views of the city.Written 21 October 2022
- paulst20180 contributionsGreat Tour Experience 5 StarWe did a personalised tour of the the Mosel Valley with Carl in August. Carl was an awesome host who bought with him great knowledge of the local area and wines and a great sense of fun and humour. I think we tasted something like 32 wines across a couple of wineries and finished with some awesome food and some fantastic aged Rieslings. We absolutely enjoyed our day with Carl and couldn't recommend his services more highly.Written 15 September 2022
- heatherb2320 contributionsFantastic! We did an absolutely fantastic 3-day private wine tour of south-west Germany with Carl. He is a great guide - very enthusiastic and knowledgable. He took the time to listen to what we wanted and planned a very memorable trip for us.Written 23 August 2022

- hollyvikes0 contributionsGrape wine - grape day!Carl picked the 3 of us up and we started our day with a very tasty Sket to start our day! We headed to the south Mosel and visited Daniel at his home and winery. Daniel shared about 10 wines with us and gave us a tour of 2 of his vines. 1 was up on the mountain and we got to enjoy a very nice Red Riesling while taking in some beautiful views of the valley! Daniel was incredible & can’t wait to get some Sweet Child 2021! Next we headed to another much bigger winery & tried about 12 more wines. Much drier wines but still good. Enjoyed a delicious local lunch with 2 more amazing wines! Finished the day at a newer and small wine cellar. Jan gave us a tour of his cellar and we got to try some wines that were still fermenting. Overall it was an incredible day & Carl helped me fulfill my dream of tasting & purchasing wine in the Mosel valley! Highly recommend you book a trip with Carl. Be sure to tell him what kind of wine you like!Written 4 February 2022
- Shu H0 contributionsGrape day out!!Don’t hesitate - just book! This is a fantastic wine tour with Carl, a super dedicated, fun and enthusiastic wine guy who cares (and loves wine puns). We booked a two day tour. From the moment Carl picked us up with a bottle of sparkling wine we knew we were in for a treat. Being geeky wine enthusiasts, we had emailed with a list of requests beforehand (natural, organic, biodynamic, vertical tastings etc.) and Carl more than met the brief. We visited four independent vineyards in the Mosel/Rheingau region, each of a different character and some family-owned, all offering something unique. We had our favourites but Carl truly put in the effort to think about what we might like and showcased something interesting about German wine with each stop. We discovered a love for old Rieslings (ie “old gold”) and were fortunate enough to find some rare gems. Extra kudos also for the lunch spots on both days - the first day’s lunch featured some amazing wild boar pasta and the second was a German grill house with the best pork chop and sausage I have ever tasted. Also plenty of opportunity to try different wine on the lunch stops too! It was awesome to see Carl putting in the effort to build relationships with the vineyard owners, bringing them bottles of wine to try, rather than treating this as a purely commercial endeavour. He also gifted us a bottle of pet nat, just because he wanted us to try how good it could be. Wine-aside, Carl also offered up some tips on where to stay and eat on our other stops in Germany. Truly a personalised and fantastic tour, thank you Carl!Written 10 October 2021
- willemv2350 contributionsAmazing winetasting tourCarl was very knowledgeable and gave us loads of insights. We visited 3 different wineries that all had something unique to offer. Carl tailored the tour to what we wanted but also inspired us to try alot of different blends that were amazing. We tasted a total of 52 different wines!! Snacks and even more wine was provided in between the stops. We had great day and would definitely call him again when we go back to the area for some more amazing German wines!Written 4 October 2020
- FlowerLover770 contributionsA wonderful, friendly, honest guide & a great wine tour!My husband and I had a great time on this private wine tour. Carl picked us up in his extremely comfortable car, provide great snacks, was very knowledgeable, and took us to wineries that were great! He clearly has a very good reputation in the local industry based on the welcoming that he received at the wineries. He tailored the wineries to our tastes (which he determined prior to our wine tour), and we bought wines at every stop since they were so good! At one photo op spot, where I accidentally left my purse (and didn't realize until 30 minutes later), he went back (on his own) and brought my purse to me at the next winery where I was waiting, and nothing was missing and I was so relieved since my passport and credit cards were in my purse! I say this only because I want to provide an example indicating how honest and helpful he is. This was one of the best wine tours I've had in my life (and I've had wine tours in many countries). Thank you !!Written 28 March 2020
- marbledprimerib0 contributionsFantastic tour! The guide goes the extra mile for a memorable top-quality experience. The welcome came with breakfast of traditional bread and salami sticks from the local village bakery, accompanied by coffee and even glasses of bubbly. I love these little touches he brings to the tour. For example, he drove us via the scenic routes, for oodles of photo stops. He also knows the history and geography quite well, and we learned a lot about the region's specialties. The number of winemakers we visited was maximized -- we got a taste from 50+ bottles in one day -- with room for checking out cellars not in the plan. Recommendations are on point: from sites to hotel to dinner place, everything was excellent. He basically worked on our vague idea of what we wanted to do and created a seamless weekend that hit all the right spots. Overall, a lovely and relaxing holiday thanks to Weinkoepfe. I would highly recommend to anyone curious about German wines.Written 7 October 2019
- 663justinf0 contributionsA Fine Time and Rhine WineThis is one of, if not the, best wine tours I’ve ever done from start to finish. Carl is a fantastic ambassador for German wines and tailored the tour perfectly to our tastes. Given the flexibility of the tour, your tastes, and the time of year the stops will vary, but you can count on three excellent small and family-owned wineries you never would have otherwise found and another stop in the middle for a good lunch and, of course, more wine. We visited in September, so one of our stops was a celebration of a new vintage in Rheingau where we were able to meet ninth-generation winemakers and do multiple vertical tastings and another into Rheinhessen for some pinot noirs. As other reviews state, pickup is easy (he picked us up and dropped us off at our AirBnB, which allowed us to buy lots of wine since it’s such a bargain in the region) he came prepared with a bottle of sekt for the group to drink while learning about wine. Carl is extremely personable and made sure we got the full experience at each stop even though that meant going much later than planned. It’s important to note that the wine flows very freely on this tour, so be sure to pace yourself to avoid turning into a wine bogan.Written 9 September 2019

This tour really allows you to get out of the big city and enjoy some of the best that Germany has to offer. Incredible wines and the opportunity to taste nearly every possible variety, the lunch stop was the best food I've ever have had in the entire country. Carl is also top class and speaks both English and German, he really made this trip special.

Highly recommend this tour for pretty much anyone, it was one of the clear stand out experiences of 5 weeks touring around Europe. It doesn't matter what your interest is- learning more about wine drinking, wine production or general local culture Carl was accommodating, warm, enthusiastic and always thinking of a new idea or option as he learnt what the group was interested in. We visited 3 different vineyards/wineries which were outstanding. Navigated flood conditions to pivot and join a festival overlooking the vineyards for lunch. Such a fun day.

Carl was absolutely exceptional as our tour guide, wine expert, chauffeur and entertainer. His knowledge and network of the Rhine Valley wineries is unparalleled. He knows the wines and the region and the region knows him. Would strongly recommend engaging him on a most hospitable and memorable tour of Germany’s exceptional wine regions.

This experience was more wonderful than we imagined. Carl picked us up on time with a bottle of German sparkling wine to sip on during our 30 minute drive in a BMW SUV to the Rheingau region to a town called Erbach. We went to two old wineries dating back to the 1800s, then we went to lunch at a place that sells wine from all over the country. It was fantastic. The countryside is breathtaking and Carl is very knowledgeable about German winemaking from everything in the different soils to the weather. He has a passion for the winemakers work and he does an excellent job sharing his passion and knowledge with you. Our tour was personalized for our desire to see beautiful properties and to learn about German wine. Carl is kind, patient, and full of positive every. This tour is a must!

Carl did an incredible job picking amazing small wineries for us and was a great host. My friends and I all had a wonderful day, drank amazing wine, and discovered how much we’ve been missing out on German wines. Could not recommend a tour with Carl enough!

Carl was right of time picking us up for our personal tour; we visited three unique wineries and also had an excellent lunch. He was so knowledgeable, personable, and just all around lovely. Our tastings were tailored and absolutely perfect. Lunch was outstanding. I can not recommend this enough, you really need to do this!

We had the best time with Carl! Highly recommend this tour! Carl made the process seamless from end to end - reserving the tour, planning, etc to pickup. He met us at our hotel and greeted us with glasses of wine - always a great start to any tour! Carl then drove us to the Rhine River region, where we visited three wineries, all lovely with delicious wines and great staff. Carl also took us to a few points of interest, where he graciously took pictures for us. He is exceptionally knowledgeable and we learned a great deal from him. If you are visiting Frankfurt, this tour is a must!

Went on two excellent tours with Carl. One in the Rheingau/Rheinhessen and the other in the Mosel. There were plenty of laughs and was impressed by his knowledge of the wine producers in Germany, from the large and established famous VDP producers to younger winemakers experimenting with new styles and techniques. On the tours, I got to see and taste at both. Fantastic experience, highly recommend!

What time does the tour begin? I am very very very interested in this tour. We are in Frankfurt only for the day. We arrive at 8:45 AM at Frankfurt international Airport. What time does this tour begin? We will have to go through customs and collect our bags and leave our bags with the bag lockers in the train station. But we should be available by noon or possibly 11am. Is that too late for us to do this tour?

Hi Sharie, What day will you be arriving in Frankfurt? ... I hope I have not missed you guys already. I can a make tour work from 11am still getting to at least 3 wine stops. Depending on your luggage size I could store it in the boot of my car if that help.
Happy to try and make this work for you guys.
Cheers

ha missed this question... but I answer as I like it... yes lots of Riesling! maybe you will try over 40 different German wines! So if you like wine Im sure you wont be disappointed. Cheers

Are the wines sampled mostly sweet or mostly dry? I don't like sweet wines so not sure this is the right tour for me?
Written 7 April 2019
Hey Sharie, sorry I only just saw this message for the first time. Germany has a reputation for high quality, thoughtfully made sweet wines ( which when done well are balanced with acidity and complex flavours). There was also an old reputation that German wine is only sweet - which today it is barely the case and most wine makers are proud to be showing mostly “troken” dry wines. I would love to take you on a grape escape to discover how good German wines can be!
