Get the most out of your visit to Sachsenhausen, one of the first concentration camps in Germany, by touring with a guide. On this full-day tour from Berlin, you'll listen to a historian detail the influence of the Third Reich and the timeline of how this camp came to be. Travel via train from Berlin with your guide (ticket at own expense) which eliminates the need to rent a car.

What to Expect

Make your way to the Zoologischer Garten train station or Hackescher Markt train station to meet your guide. You will need a Berlin Transport ABC Zone ticket. Relax and enjoy the scenery on the ride to Oranienburg, which takes about 45 minutes.

Arrive at the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, where you'll have pre-purchased entrance fees included with your tour. Follow your guide, who will fill you in on the history of the camp, where 200,000 people were imprisoned between the years of 1936 and 1945.

Visit the burial pits, gallows, gas chambers, and punishment cells located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here.

At the conclusion of your tour, return to Berlin the way you came.

We went with a guide who was quite specific about some of the atrocities that took place. At times it was quite graphic and some parents might want to filtre the content for children. My wife is an experienced primary school... More

No, you have to buy it from the station. I think it was €7 for an all day ticket.
