    What to Expect
With this ticket to the fabulous  Mémorial de Caen museum, you're free to explore the exhibits at your leisure – including starting your visit anytime you like while the museum is open.

This facility is both a museum and a war memorial, dedicated to putting into perspective the events of World War II that destroyed most of Caen and devastated the surrounding area. The timeline of the exhibits begins at the conclusion of World War I and ends at the fall of the Berlin Wall, giving viewers a much broader sense of the historical impact of the Battle of Normandy which liberated Caen.

While the museum features decades' worth of history, the centerpiece of the  Mémorial de Caen is related to D-Day. This is the only museum in the Normandy region that gives visitors an opportunity to learn so much about the Normandy landings from the perspective of both sides in the war, with incredibly detailed accounts of the 100-day campaign afterward.

Begin your visit to the museum with a film about D-Day, which will set the stage for the remainder of your tour. The film includes both archival footage and footage from fictional movies. Another film you can watch, called 'Hope for the Future,' begins in the 1940s and goes through the end of the 20th century.

There is an audio guide for the museum that is available in six languages, or you can choose to simply explore on your own through the interactive exhibits. There are two on-site restaurants in the museum – the Café du Mémorial, an informal spot where you can get sandwiches and salads, and La Terrasse, a more formal sit-down restaurant – where you can have a midday break (own expense). If you prefer, you're welcome to bring the fixings for a picnic to spread out on the museum lawn. And if you don't feel like you've seen everything in the museum by day's end, your ticket is valid for a full 24 hours from the time you first enter the museum, so you can return the next day to complete your visit.

Exceptionally emotional exhibits on display at the museum illustrating the courage and fortitude it must've taken for each brave soldier (many were young volunteers!) to endure during their battle at Juno Beach. Although we only had time to concentrate on the Canadian aspect of

I'm not really into war and war memorials but was on a tour of the area and the memorial was part of the tour. I found the memorial to be quite interesting but did find some of it very depressing. I think men get more out of it than most women. Women are more interested in

What an amazing place! We started our 4-day trip across the Normandy ‘D-Day’ sites in Caen and at this museum. An informative and well laid-out exhibition that gave us a 1st class overview of WWII and provided real context for D-Day. We were able to double the amount of time

A friend had told us to go to the museum for an hour or two before we were going with Mathias Leclere for our tour of the beaches. Well my husband and I spent almost four hours and could have stayed longer. This museum is a definite must before you tour the beaches to prepare
