Overview

The Edinburgh Vaults, one of the city’s most fascinating sights, can only be accessed on a tour. This one focuses exclusively on the vaults, an underground warren below South Bridge in Edinburgh’s Old Town. Step inside with a local guide who’ll reveal tales of hardship and struggle in 18th-century Edinburgh, grisly stories from the city’s dark past, and lead you to a hidden witchcraft temple.

What to Expect

Greet your guide on the Royal Mile and escape the tourist trail to discover Edinburgh’s deepest secrets on this underground walking tour through the Edinburgh Vaults. These infamous vaults fill all 19 arches of South Bridge in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. As you walk, you’ll learn the hideous conditions in which Edinburgh’s poorer citizens lived during the 18th century.

Descend into the dark, dank vaults and learn what it was like to live in the darkness—and which criminals sought their prey there. You’ll explore candlelit Niddry’s Wynd, visit a witchcraft temple with a haunted stone circle, and brave the Haunted Vault, where a myriad mysterious events have occurred.

Really good activity to do if you're in the area

We went as a work group so there was lots of us. Our tour guide was amazing - I think his name was Noel. Really interesting and not cheesy or cringey like normal. Would definitely recommend if you have some time to kill in Edinburgh

Did not adapt to the reality of the group

I am sad to have to give this review. The tour seemed nice and the premises are very scary, but the guide was not up to what was expected. We were a group that included several non-native speakers, and the tour did not make any...More

Amazing Tour

My boyfriend and I joined the 4 o’clock tour of the underground vaults with Ewan, who was an absolutely fantastic guide. I do wish that there would have been a chance to explore the vaults alone, but overall it was an amazing tour and I...More

I went on this tour 6 years ago and it was so good that I booked it as a treat for my friends. We attended the 4pm tour on 29th April. The lady who conducted the tour was putting far too much emphasis on a...More

Hidden history

Really interesting and the guide worked really hard to make it atmospheric. Would have liked a little longer in exhibit room and a little more detailed information in the vaults.

Hi, to my knowledge the answer to this is NO. I think the way the tour is structured it's not really appropriate for dogs
