- Matthew K0 contributionsAbsolutely Amazing Adventure in Dune BuggiesThis was the best thing we did while in Punta Cana. (Just some notes up front, wear clothes and shoes you do not care if they get dirty or muddy, wear sneakers and not flip flops, Bri g your sunscreen and bring some towels and absolutely buy one of the bandanas from Charlie for the ride, we were not sure at first and glad we did) We were picked up at our hotel (Palma Real) right on time. It took about 10 minutes to get to the shop. We met Charlie who was the owner and our tour guide for the day. We signed the standard waiver for any tour you do and then were given a safety and rules overview. All simple stuff to do and abide by. Basically just listen and don’t be stupid is how I would sum it up. Charlie had a great sense of humor and the day was off to a great start. One note, these are REAL DEAL DUNE BUGGIES like you see in movies. They are open aired and have a 4 speed manual transmission. If you do not like the wind or know how to drive a manual transmission this is not the right tour for you. I had not driver a manual in many years and it came right back so although this is not the place to learn, if you have just not done so in a while I highly recommend doing this as it will come right back. So after all of the briefings, Charlie fits you to your buggie. All of them are set up for different heights, so he will make sure you are in the right one. Off we go and we ride down a highway for a little bit until we get off and start down some roads in the countryside. The scenery is beautiful and you can now tell you have left the touristy area behind and are seeing the real country. You ride through towns, see the locals and how friendly they are. You make stops along the way in small towns at their local grocery stores. Charlie will explain where you are and how life works on the island and how simple it is. Although as you can imagine, it is not a rich place outside of tourist areas it is rich in community. Charlie told us that in each town, everyone tries to help everyone else. Making sure that all survive, eat and are able to raise their families. You get a snack at both on the way out and at a different one on the way back in. The cheese and crackers on the way out were amazing! Next you off to see some of the most amazing unspoiled coastline and going only where a dune buggy could take you. You get to stop, look around, take some pictures and off again, you make several stops along the coastline at places so beautiful and you would be unable to see if not on this tour. These are not places “tour operators” go, these are places Charlie knows about. Also, make sure to bring a bag with a towel and maybe a change of shirt or shorts as you will have the opportunity to go swimming in the ocean in a secluded cove. It was so nice!! You stop for lunch on a great ranch that is line in the middle of nowhere and served a delicious traditional lunch of rice. beans, salad and a meat (we had chicken). After lunch you ride through the mountainside seeing amazing scenery and how people live outside the main areas. The next place we stopped was a farm that had all kinds of fruit trees but most importantly coffee and chocolate beans. You will learn about the trees and what different things they can be used for, you will get to touch and smell coffee and cacao beans. The best part is that you get to taste a cacao fruit fresh, then when it has been dried to be a bean, then when it has been ground and then they add some sugar so you get to taste chocolate from begging to end. They also make some fresh hot chocolate with the fresh ground powder (this is to die for!!, I can never have regular hot chocolate again!) and you get to sample coffee as well. They bring out some fresh fruit just picked and sliced (pineapple, banana, star fruit) and of course you can buy some of the things you sampled. We got the chocolate powder. After that you drive to the second grocery store I mentioned and have a snack, talked to a few locals hanging out and then back to the main road for about a 50km ride back. It was a full day and the best money we spent! Don’t think just do!!! Finally, Charlie takes a ton of pictures and videos of you during the trip including while you are driving, they cost $20USD and well worth it. Also, they do not take any credit cards. Again, absolutely do this for an amazing adventure!Written 17 February 2024
- SFC19760 contributionsLoads of fun driving real buggiesWe researched many buggy tours before deciding on this one and we absolutely made the right choice. Sure, it costs a bit more, but it offers a much better experience driving proper, well-maintained buggies with manual gearboxes. Our group of just 3 buggies was so much better than other tours that have 30 or 40 'toy' buggies in a long line plodding along. Just a fantastic way to escape the tourist areas and see a little bit more of DR whilst having a lot of fun doing it. Yeah, we got covered in mud (and who knows what else), but that just made the dip in the ocean, at a deserted beach, all the more enjoyable. If you actually enjoy driving and don't mind getting a little dirty, book this - you won't regret it. Thank you to Charly, Angela and the team at Xtreme Buggy. It was a great day!!Written 7 February 2024

- V3547NFjessa0 contributionsTHE BEST!This was the coolest thing I've ever done. We had so much fun, we were sad when it ended. We felt like we were immersed into culture and I want to do it again ASAP. We met the sweetest people and saw the most amazing beaches. It was truly an experience and I will recommend it to everyone.... Seriously regretting not buying more coffee and cacao.Written 15 May 2023
- ericsY2642MV0 contributionsAn absolute MUST do!An absolute amazing way to see Punta Cana! Small tour group (only 3 + 1 guide) that took us on a 100+ mile journey through various areas. It is the best way to see the Dominican culture and interact with people, try their foods and learn their lifestyle. Greet service on pickup and drop-off to/from our resort. You will get some level of dirty! You're in an open air dune buggy driving on the streets, sand, dirt and mud. But it is worth it! We will definitely go again on our next trip to Punta Cana.Written 8 May 2023
- GoPlaces4377430 contributionsFun fast and informativeThese are true vw 4 speed manual dune buggies. We drove all over the countryside, on highways, a long the beach on sand trails, and up in the mountains. The views are breathtaking. We made several stops to meet the locals and for a real home cooked lunch that was better than our resort food. This day trip was the highlight of our vacation, and I highly recommend this adventure.Written 25 March 2023
- stevebV778ZD0 contributionsBeat excursion you will be on.This tour was the highlight of our vacation. Charlie was an exceptional tour guide and had setup great stops over the whole day. Every stop came with great background and knowledge of some history and stories of where we were. Would highly recommend Xtreme Buggy full day adventure if you are looking to have a day in your vacation. Thanks again Charlie , it was a pleasure getting to know you, we are looking forward to our next trip to Punta Cana and going again. Steve and Mary BruceWritten 1 February 2023

- billg68bg0 contributionsAwesome island tour by buggyWe booked with this company after extensive research and we decided they were the best. We are confident we were not wrong. Ironically, the owner, Angela, hosts YouTube videos my wife was following for months prior to leaving. We think she's awesome and so is her company. We had a small group of four buggies plus the guide Gerhart. Gerhart was an excellent guide, who showed us a lot and a great time. The buggies were awesome. fast, four speed sticks. Being manual transmissions, make sure someone in your group can drive a stick. We like that they show you more of the real island and not the tourists traps. We drove through farmlands, beach sand, mud and some light rain. We also drove on some highways and through some villages. We went to a coffee farm where we tried fresh fruits right from the trees on the farm, drank coffee and cocoa made fresh from the beans of their own trees. Gerhart and the owners of the farm gave us a tour and presentation on how the coffee and cacao is made into consumable coffee and cocoa as well as showing us the other things they grow on the farm, including vanilla and cinnamon. We enjoyed the farm a lot We went to a small shop in a village, where we had fresh squeezed juice, crackers and some really phenomenal cheese as well as getting some education on the local culture. We went to a ranch for lunch and took a pickup ride up to the top of a mountain, Loma Linda. On the mountain, we rode swings on the side of the mountain, accompanied by just our group, Gerhart, the driver and a couple of horses. It was great. We then went down the mountain. swam and cleaned up in a small river and then had a fantastic lunch and talked about the day's adventure. Next, we headed back and, on the way, we stopped at a small farm stand and had fresh coconut and coconut milk right out of the coconut. When we returned to base, we did a group photo, chatted a bit and then met Angela. She's really cool. She dropped us off at the front desk of our resort in a dune buggy, a sight one of the valets said he hadn't seen in his nine years at the resort. He thought it was a great arrival and it sparked a fun conversation and vacation comparisons. I would highly recommend Angela and the Xtreme Buggy crew. If I find my way back to Punta Cana, I will certainly pay them another visit.Written 11 September 2022
- X8181QOsamanthab0 contributionsGreat excursion but not as advertisedAwesome tour and a great way to see the island but we did not do everything advertised. Charlie picked us up at the hotel on time and he was very friendly. Raff was our guide and he was great. The buggy’s are well built and have shocks which my body can appreciate. I loved the fact that they do smaller groups. We started out riding the road for a bit and was taken to a house where u get to see how coffee and cacau is made and u can sample. They have items for sale if interested. We then went to a store where u are given a mango drink and some crackers and cheese. We drove some more and then u reach the off road portion. Wear clothes that u don’t care about because u will get wet and muddy. We rode along the beach which was beautiful. As advertised I was expecting to be able to swim at the beach but we only stayed long enough for pics. We stopped at a shack to see how they live. We then went to our lunch destination. There was a sketchy homemade zip line u can try if ur brave enough. The lunch was a traditional Dominican lunch and was delicious. We then had to pack into the back of a pickup truck to go up the mountain. This was a very rough ride especially for my parents that are older. At the top of the mountain it was beautiful and they had swings where u can swing over the side of the mountain. We then went back down the mountain and back on the buggy’s. We stopped at a coconut stand on the side of the road and Raff paid for coconuts for everyone. Then we headed back to the shop with the buggy’s. It was advertised as also including a boat ride, swim at the beach, and horseback riding on the beach. We did not do any of those things. When we got back and asked we were told they no longer offer that and the website has just not been updated which was a bit disappointing since we paid for more. Raff took lots of pics and u can purchase a link to them for $20. Overall it was a great excursion I just wished we had received all the services we expected or at least offered a discount.Written 24 May 2022

- LovranaCabraja0 contributionsFar above expectations! This tour totally exceeded my expectations! We were a group of 4 (8 people group total) and did the full day tour, and it was worth every penny! Gerhard was an excellent guide who gave a lot of information on the local life but also had a good sense of humor. The buggies are not hard to drive, and it might sound a bit intimidating going out on the highway with them, but it's only for a few minutes each way. I would definitely recommend taking an extra set of clothes for the way back as well as a bathing suite and some sunscreen (there is a box where you can safely store all of these things). I highly recommend this tour, especially if you want to see a little bit more than just the resorts!Written 10 February 2022

Plan on taking bad clothes because they will likely be ruined. The buggy’s are pretty haggard but still fun, you get to see some off the beaten track stuff which is neat. Be prepared, every stop people are very pushy to sell you stuff.

Hola 220artj, We at Xtreme Buggy have original Dune Buggy's. VW engine, air-cooled, they all drive stick shift 4 speed. Our groups are 3-5 Buggy's. Not once do we stop so someone can buy something ( or sellers can hassle you) we do go off the beaten path and only visit original Local colmados ( there is nothing to buy, unless you need half a cucumber, or onions) you went with someone else, check out our tours, so you can book the "real thing" once we are all back to normal again... greetings from Punta Cana, angela

Just wanted to share our experience with these great German folks who run the operation here.
Booking was easy via initial PayPal deposit. They picked us up from our resort on time. After safety briefing, we jumped in and started the drive. First part was a country “road” filled with potholes and rainwater and we got splashed with dirt water and it was a blast!!
Stopped at a local house/shop where they prepared coffee and choc candy for us and guide showed us how most DR people live.
Then we drove to an abandoned hilly area that looked like a quarry.
Then we went to a small farm with pigs, chickens and ducks. Then we drove to a small convenience store where we used the bathroom, washed our hands and had some Coke and Fanta.
Finally we went to Macao beach which was beautiful. The guide warned us to ignore people coming to sell stuff to us.
Overall we had an awesome time and I can’t recommend this tour enough.
Warning: if you have a bad back or not comfortable with smelly water splashing everywhere, this is not for you. They sell pics after the trip for $20 which are sent via google drive later. If you don’t know how to drive stick shift, you can ride with the guide.
Throw away your clothes at the end of the trip and bring extra set to change into.

Thank you for an unforgettable experience! My boys & I absolutely loved it. So appreciate all the effort you put into capturing photos of the Dominican culture and the locals we met along the way. Well worth the download you offer. Your love for the local community was evident from the way they respect you and your daily group of "friends".

This is a must if you love to drive and want to see the real dominican republic. We booked a few tours with our travel agent before we arrived and unfortunately we were left very disappointed. We found xtreme Buggys on trip advisor and after reading all the amazing reviews we booked a half day. It was amazing, the guys that run it are fantastic, have great knowledge of the area and give back to the community. We had such a good time that we went and booked the full day tour for the following day.
We loved the fact that they never take out more than 4 Buggys at a time, unlike other tours where its upto 20 or 30 Buggys and you are rushed through everything and being pushed to buy things.
Xtreme Buggys do not rush you at all, it was such a great experience and the homes and business they take you to to experience real life here at the DR are some welcoming and lovely. They have fresh coffee and real chocolate waitinf for you, not the rubbish you buy in supermarket.
One thing I will say is take a change of clothes as you will get wet and muddy, but it's more than worth it.
The only bad thing for us is that I wish we hadn't bothered with the other tours and found this one first.
If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.
Special thanks to Angela and Charlie who went out of their way to get us extra coffee beans and chocolate beans. Also had issues with withdrawing cash for the extra tour, but Angela could not have been more helpful.
Please if you visit the Dominica Republic you have to do this

We chose the half day excursion with Xtreme Buggy. Pick up at our hotel was at 7:30 am, returning sometime around 1:30pm. We got to experience the thrill of driving these fun VW buggies on the Dominican roads, in rush hour traffic and through some spectacular countryside, off-roading through an abandoned limestone quarry and drove through small villages, stopping to allow a farmer to exercise his right-of-way with his herd of cows. Be warned, it’s a dusty, dirty ride. Do not aim for the cow patties, because you will be wearing them once they splatter! We stopped to visit a homestead that is also a store, meeting place and general hub of local activity, to view the property and beautiful gardens. We tasted some delicious Dominican coffee – served black and sweet – and enjoyed some Dominican chocolate. Our final stop, before heading back to the hotel, was at Macao Beach. Simply stunning, words just cannot convey the beauty of this spectacular public beach. Turquoise waters that just take your breath away. One thing I noticed, especially away from the “tourist areas”, was how everyone smiled and waved – from the children to the men on horseback – without any expectation, other than a smile and wave in return. These weren’t hotel staff waiting for a tip, but honest to goodness local people, living their lives and just happy to see us drive by. We highly recommend Xtreme Buggy!!

Mark was an awesome guide. Visiting the village was very interesting. All around a blast. We have been to the Dominican 3 times and did an excursion each time. This was the best and the only thing I would do differently is book the full day excursion instead of the half.... you get to drive up a mountain and visit a ranch on the full day tour.
If you're contemplating shopping this.... just do it. And be sure to go with THIS company for a smaller group experienced!

This excursion was TOTALLY worth the time and $. We took our 14 year olds with us and it was AMAZING! There are 4 of us in the family. The shuttle picked us up from the hotel and dropped us off at the buggy place. The owners gave us a health and safety overview and they were spot on.
We traveled though a mix of back roads, fields, and main roads. The buggies were surprisingly smooth rides and SO MUCH FUN! We also stopped at an incredible beach and played in the waves - what an experience!
Our guide was Mark - he is a Canadian with a ton of experience from living in the DR. He had an incredible amount of knowledge of the Dominican history, culture and lifestyle and he related it to our way of life. Even my kids were in awe! Plus he is super funny and we laughed all the way through.
We had a small group of buggies in our tour - only 4 plus the guide buggy. It was perfect. I wouldn't have wanted a much larger group. When we stopped at different sites, we had intimate interactions with the locals (they all seemed to know Mark and were super happy to see him). Because the group was small, we could ask Mark lots of questions, and it felt very personal.
Mark took all the pics for us along the way so we didn't need our camera or phones. Great memories!!
Can't recommend this excursion enough...

Brilliant! We booked last minute, Angela sorted us out. Just us (2 buggies) and the guide who was amazing. Felt safe, professional but mostly incredible fun! We went on a day with continuous monsoon rain, we couldn’t do the whole tour as the road was literally a river. We got incredibly wet and muddy! Passed loads of other inferior buggies that had broken down in the extreme weather. We totally had the best buggies with the best company. Hotel pick up - on time. Agree with other reviews, don’t go with other companies, go with Xtreme, it is totally worth it!
I chose Xtreme because they don’t go where everyone else goes - tourist traps.

It was an awesome buggy tour, our guide (an owner) was extremely nice and we had a great drive through the country side to see the real Punta Cana. Plenty of mud and some other "stuff" made it one of our best excursions on any trip we've been. You will get dirty1!!!
It avoids the tourist traps (like where the other so-called buggy tours go). You spend alot of time driving both back roads, farm paths and paved roads. Worth your time and money. Also, it was fun driving a 4-speed shift again!!!
Thanks Angela and Rolf for a great time!!!

Our family of 14 took the half day tour and we had a great time! My husband and I took this tour almost 13 years ago and loved it so we had to do it again for our family vacation. I highly recommend it if you know how to drive a stick shift! The owners and the guides are awesome !

There are afternoon tours as well, but make sure you schedule your tour in advance! This is the best thing we went to and it fills up fast
