    Sani Pass
Stop: 7 hours - Admission included
The Sani Pass has been described by almost everyone as the 'Mother of all Passes'. It is a gravel pass with extremely steep bends between KwaZulu-Natal’s Underberg region and Lesotho. It is higher and steeper and much tougher than any of its Southern African competitors and the steep switch-backs offer the most exceptional views in the country. Built in 1950 as a bridle path, what this pass takes out of you in the challenge of adventure, it gives back in scenery. As the altitude increases, the road becomes narrower and more treacherous. All signs of human habitation disappear and you come face to face with the vast, desolate beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains. The road is made of gravel, and at elevations ranging from 1544m to 2876m at the summit, the Sani pass is only for the bravest and the best guides. For safety reasons, only 4×4 cars are allowed on this Pass.

The whole experience was fantastic. Greg, the tour guide, was super professional: he picked us up on time from the hotel, we felt respected and valued all the way. His knowledge of the Sani Pass and Lesotho and its culture was beyond expected. The views of the mountains and the countless waterfalls were breathtaking. We stopped halfway up to take photos and to enjoy snacks and freshly baked muffins by Greg's wife, Jenny. Into Lesotho, Greg took us to one village where we learnt about the culture of Basotho people: how they use blankets, how they bake bread, how they fuel fire, etc. This was a great experience for us. I strongly recommend people to put this tour in their bucket list, but make sure you let the experienced people like Greg drive you up the mountains so you can focus on enjoying the tour to the fullest.

Greg took us up the Sani Pass as well as through the rural part of Lesotho for a visit to a local town. We were pleasantly surprised when Greg opened the boot of his 4x4 and showed us all the home made snacks his wife Angie prepared for us. We had a delicious lunch with a beautiful view and enjoyed coffee, cookies and muffins. Throughout the tour, Greg told us all about the Lesotho culture, nature and history on the Sani Pass and didn’t shy away from a good joke. His car was in excellent condition and his confident and patient driving made us feel very safe with him. We would absolutely recommend Sani Pass & Lesotho private tours as the efforts of Greg and Angie create a very personal and professional experience with value for money.

Greg gave us a really wonderful day trip tour up Sani Pass. He is very knowledgeable of the history of the area, from the geology and vegetation to the culture. He is a great storyteller which makes the environment come to life. He is very relaxed and friendly which put us very much at ease. Angie organized the most beautiful tea-time treats and added extra touches that made the day feel so luxurious and made us feel very special. We would absolutely recommend these guys for any tours. Their tours are excellent value for money and they put huge effort into making sure their clients are gaining a full experience. Thanks very much for making us some great memories!

We heard about Greg and Angie’s private tour company from our hotel. In the Covid-19 setting this was a perfect option for my family. It was our first time in the Southern Drakensberg and this was such a fantastic way to see the area and Sani pass.

The day was full of personal touches: bouquets on the seats, handmade biscuits and local stories from Greg. Although it was a misty day (which unfortunately obscured some of the views), the experience was still so memorable and misty weather shouldn’t deter you from doing a tour with Greg. Lesotho itself was a lovely place to experience: from a visit to Alina’s hut and a short history of Lesotho, to Africa’s highest pub (an absolute treat).

Covid 19: before crossing the South African border at the bottom of the pass, you have to pay a small fee to get swabbed for Covid. This only took about 15 minutes for our family of four. All other Covid-19 protocols were strictly adhered to and everyone in our family unit felt comfortable and safe throughout the whole day.

Thanks again Angie and Greg for such a wonderful, memorable experience!

My wife and I did the trip during our honeymoon and it was amazing! The whole tour is very well thought out with extra touches and special gestures. Greg is very knowledgeable about the area and the people. You get a unique perspective about Lesotho and the history of Sani Pass and the surrounding areas. The drive up and down Sani Pass is exciting with breath taking views. The ride is very comfortable and you can tell that Greg is an experienced driver, so you always feel safe.

All the extra admin (border crossings, Covid Testing etc) is sorted out for you, so there is no confusion. The website and the additional admin/info and communication from Angie is very efficient and accurate. (And the baked goods as well!!)

There are many highlights to the trip (Sani Pass, the Lesotho Hut, the Highest Pub in Africa) but it is the entire experience that makes it a one of a kind.

We can highly recommend Sani Pass & Lesotho Private Tours!

Excellent day tour with Greg. He took us up to see some bushman rock art and he is extremely knowledgable on the history of the area. We had a wonderful time going up Sani pass. The lunch provided by Angie was exceptional and I whole heartedly recommend the butternut soup! Especially when the weather is cold. Greg and Angie are very organized, punctual, professional and go out of their way to ensure you have a great time with them!

10/10!! You cannot go to Sani pass without arranging a Greg and Angie tour!

We would give Greg and Angie an 11 out of 10. From the moment we made the booking we received great service. Angie was quick and efficient with her replies whenever we had queries.
The day of the trip Greg collected us and made sure we had all in order to make the trip through the border without issues. He is very knowledgeable about the area and gave us enough time to see everything and take plenty photos. He went the extra mile(literally and figuratively) to drive a little further into Lesotho to see if we can get to the snow. We also had the most delicious snacks which Greg brought along - home made.
We had the most memorable day thanks to Greg and Angie. They really go out of their way to make this a special experience.

We booked a private tour to Lesotho as wanted someone with proper knowledge of the area and culture whilst getting there safely.
The booking process was very informative and smooth. We even got help booking our transfer (we were staying in a bit far away in Zimbali) to Underberg's pick up point. Upon arrival we were met with flowers, bottled water and a blanket. So nice and well thought through. Proper sturdy jeep (impeccably clean!) with our lovely driver Greg. He was very welcoming and I felt I could ask him anything along the way.
It is a bumpy ride and it just amazing a jeep can handle it but it sure did. VERY happy not to be sitting in a minibus with lots of people during the bumps and turns.
Stunning ride in beautiful scenery. Hard to describe how pretty this part of the world is.
We had great things told and pointed out to us on the way and we even stopped at for a coffee break at a viewing point. Homemade cake on top of the world is a unique treat! Greg was very helpful at the border crossings and we could choose if we wanted to cross by foot or car into Lesotho. Crossing a border by foot with some goats was a new experience for sure.
Interesting visit to locals (just the right amount of time and info) and we even got to try some homemade bread.
Finished our visit in Lesotho with a fun visit to the highest pub in Africa with their own beer and watched some shepards playing and dancing.
Great trip and I still can not get over the scenery.
This private tour was value for money as it was custombuilt according to our needs and we could ask to see and do more of what was interesting to us.
It was this well thought through and planned tour with its lovely touches that really made our Lesotho day so extra special.

Angie and Greg @ Sani and Lesotho private tours are absolutely amazing! When booking our trip with Angie, she went above and beyond to provide the relevant information as well as made an extra special effort in making my hubby's birthday trip up the pass Unforgettable, with amazing treats and special tailored tea menus, birthday card and certificates commemorating our successful triamph of concurring the Sani Pass.

Greg is extremely friendly and easy to talk to and is ever ready to share the history of the land with you. The ride in the Prado is comfortable and filled with laughter.

Absolutely looking forward to our next trip with Angie and Greg!

My family and I went on a day trip up sani pass into Lesotho with Sani Lesotho private tours. It was such a beautiful, adventurous and enjoyable trip. Our guide Greg was really awesome and very informative. My 9 year old really enjoyed Greg's knowledge about the pass as well as his humour🤣🙈. Angie is a lovely lady who planned the trip for us. Really kind and sweet and always available when you need to double check stuff with her. We were given pretty much every for the trip from souvenirs to blankets to bottled water. Let's not forget Angies home baked goodies that she sends along for us to enjoy which was divine! 🤭😋😋. The tour into Lesotho was amazing, visiting the village and eating traditional bread was the best! You have to use the tours to visit the village. Visiting the highest pub was my bucket list item that I can tick off my list. We will definitely be back with sani Lesotho tours soon as we want to do a trip into Lesotho for a few days. I really can't believe the tours provided so much and all inclusive in their price which was really really cheap. I wonder how they actually make a profit. Thank you Angie and Greg for making our trip memorable and affording us the opportunity to see the beautiful sani pass/Lesotho ❤️
Thank you for the beautiful bunch of flowers Angie. You are amazing
