- 1The Sani Pass has been described by almost everyone as the 'Mother of all Passes'. It is a gravel pass with extremely steep bends between KwaZulu-Natal’s Underberg region and Lesotho. It is higher and steeper and much tougher than any of its Southern African competitors and the steep switch-backs offer the most exceptional views in the country. Built in 1950 as a bridle path, what this pass takes out of you in the challenge of adventure, it gives back in scenery. As the altitude increases, the road becomes narrower and more treacherous. All signs of human habitation disappear and you come face to face with the vast, desolate beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains. The road is made of gravel, and at elevations ranging from 1544m to 2876m at the summit, the Sani pass is only for the bravest and the best guides. For safety reasons, only 4×4 cars are allowed on this Pass.

- ericasU7394TG0 contributionsA luxury ride up the mountainWe had a group of 10 that wanted to see Lesotho during our group trip to South Africa. Angie was easy to coordinate with and really responsive to messages. Greg and Nathi were terrific guides who kept things running smoothly on a gorgeous but busy winter day. The trip, despite being up a rocky mountain pass, felt like a luxury experience. The views were incredible, the treats were delightful, and the bread at the Basotho village was delicious. I'd recommend this tour to others.Written 14 July 2024
- caitlinjeangeel0 contributionsSafe & Good Trip for Mother & DaughterThank you for our special Mother & Daughter delayed Birthday tour of Lesotho as well as the little treats / birthday cake. It was amazing experience and we really enjoyed ourselves 😀 We thoroughly enjoyed the ride up Sani Pass, cast iron pot bread, mohair ladies, blanket presentation and Greg's humour. All accommodation was superb.Written 2 July 2024

- WhoELS0 contributionsAmazing ExperienceI'm so glad we booked a tour vs trying to visit Lesotho on our own. David, our guide, picked us up and dropped us off at our Airbnb, which was convenient. It was a private tour, which was great. We made stops to check out wildlife and the views. We did the Sani Pass tour. The stories and history of the areas offered us a lot of insight into the people and area that we would not have known if we attempted the pass on our own. We stopped at the highest pub for lunch. Overall, it was a great day exploring. It was nice that we were allowed all the time we wanted and weren't rushed in any way. My only regret was not booking a multi day tour. We felt very comfortable and safe on the tour.Written 24 November 2023
- Liz_hickson0 contributionsPerfect from start to finishWe have travelled to over 100 countries and have used many companies all over the world. This company would take the prizes for both value for money, communication and attention to detail. From the moment we contacted Angie we knew this was the right company to explore Lesotho….Her guidance, planning and making sure we could do everything we wanted was second to none before we even got to our actual tour. Greg took us on our tour and was an excellent driver and very knowledgeable. The Sani Pass was an extraordinary experience and the ‘nip’ of Whiskey at Whiskey corner was a great touch especially when combined with Angie’s home baked morning tea. We then spent time meeting and learning about the culture and traditions of Lesotho… it is a truely magical place with so many unique traditions and stunning scenery…it has made it into our top 10 countries which is no mean feat… Exploring Lesotho is still hard and is definitely off the usual tourist routes making it the perfect place to escape to…. Without the skill and local knowledge of Angie and Greg it would be impossible to explore all the hidden gems this wonderful country has to offer. We would highly recommend them.Written 19 September 2023
- GilJackieG0 contributionsLook no further. You have found itFrom start to finish - Excellent Angie was great to communicate with from first contact, to payment and to final details. Loved my trip to lesotho. 2 places I stayed were excellent. The places visited were great. Greg was full of facts and information and I always felt safe when he was driving. Loved the personal touch in terms of cookies and muffins. Also on information on transferring to underberg for the start of the trip. Really ... look no further. Highly recommendWritten 3 September 2023
- Xinni0 contributionsSani pass was awesome with the teamPrompt response from Angie who arranged the tour last minute for us smoothly. Dick was really friendly and picked us up on time. Transferred to our 4x4 up the sani pass which was comfortable. They prepared blankets, tea and cookies for our trip. David was an excellent guide who is knowledgeable and help us spot various wildlife like zebras, baboons and eland during our drive. Great team! Highly recommended.Written 8 August 2023
- Aneiz0 contributionsBest day ever! The day was absolutely fabulous! We started the early morning from Durban and immediately our guide, Dick, was welcoming and friendly. He was very knowledgeable and made the trip to Underberg comfortable, fast, and pleasant. That is where we then met our guide for Sani Pass, David. The transition was seamless! The moment we opened the door to the 4x4 we were greeted by the most amazing presentation. There were goodies and a welcome package to make our honeymoon special! Once on the road, David was able to answer any and every question we had. Beyond the breathtaking views, we were amazed by the freshly prepared tea time on a stop as we wound our way through the pass. The red velvet cookies were AMAZING! While in Lesotho, we learned a bunch about the Basotho people and had the privilege to be welcomed into their home. We enjoyed the bread prepared for us greatly before heading to the highest pub in Africa. While it was a very windy day at the top, we were quickly welcomed around the fires to enjoy a great lunch. The way back down to Underberg, then back to Durban, took no time at all because we felt like we had known David and Dick for ages, passing the time quickly. They went truly out of their way to make the day one of the best on our holiday. If you want a cookie-cutter experience to Sani Pass - this is not the trip for you. However, if you want a private, amazing day...look no further! We cannot recommend this trip enough.Written 29 June 2023
- LinAOma0 contributionsPerfect Adventure! This was such an amazing tour. First off, I organized everything with Angie who was truly on top of things. She asked me questions and arranged things that I needed including the round trip transport from Durban airport and extra accommodation in Underberg. I did my actual tour with Greg who was incredibly delightful. I had such an awesome time! I was sad to say goodbye to Greg at the end of my tour. He made my trip so fun! Actually every aspect of the trip from the airport transfer drivers to the organization and finally the actual tour to and around Lesotho was incredible! I highly recommend!Written 26 June 2023
- hayleyjillwags0 contributionsAbsolutely Amazing and Highly RecommendedFrom the start to the finish this trip was amazing! Our 6 year anniversary was unforgettable! The personal touches, card and special snacks hand made by Angie were so appreciated. Greg is an amazing guide. I never had one moment of not feeling safe and secure with his capable driving, and there are some hair-raising turns on the pass. His knowledge of the local area and the culture kept us enthralled all day. The trip into Lesotho and having bread in a local home was pure magic. Our day was totally and utterly unforgettable and we are going to have a hard time even coming close to the experience we had with Angie and Greg for our anniversaries to come!Written 20 June 2023
- 877vabyk0 contributionsKea leboha (Thank you!): Come for a tour, leave with friendsWe did a longer custom tour ("Lesotho's Finest") with Sani Pass Private Tours because we wanted to experience several sites in Lesotho, and we left with a friend (and an amazing tour) instead of just a tour guide. Angie at "Mission Control" organized our trip beautifully and took care of all of the arrangements up front, even sending along delicious home-baked cookies and muffins for our drive. Greg served as our guide and companion for 6 days, answering our countless questions, while navigating very challenging roads beautifully and in comfort. Angie, Greg and David are able to arrange a tour to accommodate your budget and your preferences, and they can also arrange for solo tours, so if you don't see what you want on their website or TripAdvisor, just reach out for a custom trip! Some of the highlights: - A challenging but beautiful trek guided by a local Masotho who also works as a shepherd to the highest point - Visits to two small very traditional highland villages (without running water and electricity), including a private dance presentation, a visit with a sangoma (traditional healer), and a meal of a maize dish with mutton and spinach in a traditional home - Horseback rides through a national park and a village to the stunning falls on the sure-footed Basotho ponies (and challenging terrain!) - Shared stories of life growing up in the bush, South Africa, and travels in Lesotho over bottles of pinotage and dinners by the fire Some FYIs: - The full abseil/rappeling at the falls requires a day and a half (and includes a safety presentation); unless that's on your bucket list, I recommend the horseback ride to the falls - If you do not regularly hike at altitude and with lots of elevation gain and drops, plan for the hike at Thabana Ntlenyana to take a little longer than it does the shepherds and regular alpine trekkers :) - Lesotho does not have a strong tourism infrastructure; on our tour, we stayed at the best available accommodations that allowed us to see the sights and have the experiences we wanted to have. Everywhere was clean, in beautiful settings, and had wonderful staff and food, but accommodations ranged from 3-star to 5-star. - You will need to be flexible. Sometimes museums or attractions are closed unexpectedly or there are road delays through no fault of the team, and you will just need to be flexible and change plans. (We missed a museum due to closure, but got a lovely unexpected visit to a weaving co-op that provides employment for disabled women that was also lovely to visit and a great place to purchase gifts.) - A trip to Lesotho is about the people, the culture and the terrain; there are some animals of course, but wildlife is not the primary draw. Importantly for us, Angie and Greg are also responsible tour operators. They are knowledgeable about Lesotho and its culture, and they seek to provide fair opportunities for families and villages in the area to share their culture with curious visitors. Greg helped guide us on what was appropriate during our village and home visits, and ensured we (and they!) had a positive experience. They are respectful of the Basotho people and their traditions, and you will also find that they do a number of things for the villagers. We noticed a bag of cat food in one of the traditional huts and asked where the family had purchased it; turns out Greg had brought it from South Africa on a prior trip, which led to us learning that in addition to economic opportunities for villagers, Angie and Greg help to provide warm clothes for the highland children, healthy food for their animals, and education to children on best practices for caring for companion animals (they're dog lovers themselves!). The horses we rode were all well cared for and in humane conditions, and lodges provided both employment and assistance to the local communities as part of their goals.Written 5 June 2023
- DieNicoleFritz0 contributionsPerfect trip to discover country and peopleWe had a great trip through a beautiful country. Greg knows the area and the people we visited very well. This gave the visits something personal. The scenery is breathtaking and Greg was never tired of telling us a lot about the country and always stopping where possible so we could take great pictures. The accommodations were very different but each special in its own way. We felt very comfortable. You feel that Greg wants to make the tours very personal and individual. He was always asking for feedback to make his tours even better. We can recommend Greg and Angie the hosts of "Sani Pass & Lesotho private tour" to everyone.Written 9 May 2023
- bahatimilele0 contributionsA must see to believe! The tour was incredible and Dick and David my drivers were super professional, ontime funny, and made stops where needed for photos and to explain the history! super informative tour. Was able to learn a lot and experience the natural and cultural beauty of Lesotho as a result of this tour. Definitely spend multiple days in Lesotho if you have the time!!Written 6 April 2023
- 119lexh0 contributionsAwesome experience!Excellent tour! Both our transport driver from Durban and our tour guide for Sani Pass were excellent and taught us so much about the local culture and even quite a bit of history about South Africa. The experience itself of driving up Sani Pass is absolutely gorgeous and special, it should not be missed. Plus the homemade cookies we got along the way to the top were a huge bonus! Would book with these guides again.Written 27 March 2023

We own a travel and tour company called VMG Travel and Tours from start to end Angie has been the most gracious host ever. This was supposed to a personal trip for Mervyn and myself however our clients that have traveled with us previously wanted to join us and we ended up with a group of 20 Angie organised everything to perfection. She even went the extra mile of getting the menu for us and arranging our meals at the highest Pub in SA. On arrival at the hotel we were a few minutes late and Greg was so patient and wow what a surprise it was when he brought out the most beautiful chocolate cake courtesy of Angie, this was such a beautiful gesture. The attention to detail was out of this world each of the guests had a bottle of water a small little welcome box filled wd the most divine fudge and a menu which stated what snacks will be served on route. What pleasant tour guides we had., we had Greg who was so Informative we learnt so much, the rest of our group were also full of praises of their tour guides as well. The entire experience was just amazing and I would recommend that any one who wants to visit the Sani pass or any other trip listed please contact Angie and you will never regret it.
Personally VMG Travel and Tours will definitely be arranging more tours for our groups in the near future.
Angie and Greg keep up the good work your efforts time and energy put in will definitely ensure that you reap the rewards.
Thank so much for making my birthday such a memorable one

This was my first trip up Sani Pass and into Lesotho. I am very glad that I did research and decided to book the Private Sani Pass Classic Tour. Angie was excellent at communicating and answered all my questions that made confirming a booking, very easy. On arrival at the collection point, our tour vehicle was prepared for us beautifully with fresh flowers, information leaflets, local water, souvenirs from Lesotho and a delicious chocolate fudge treat. Throughout our journey, Greg provided lots of interesting facts about the various areas. He made the cross-border experiences so convenient by completing all require documents, taking our passports and doing whatever was needed without us having to stand in queues. The road into Lesotho is very challenging and I will confidently state that I would not do this trip in my own 4x4. Greg’s humour kept the 4 of us very entertained and when doing the presentation on the Lesotho culture, geographical facts and blankets, he captured this audience and I found it all very interesting. The weather changed on our way down but Greg handled the road perfectly and we arrived back safely. I highly recommend this Private Sani Pass Classic Day Tour with Angie and Greg. Thank you very much for making this a special event for all of us.

The whole experience was fantastic. Greg, the tour guide, was super professional: he picked us up on time from the hotel, we felt respected and valued all the way. His knowledge of the Sani Pass and Lesotho and its culture was beyond expected. The views of the mountains and the countless waterfalls were breathtaking. We stopped halfway up to take photos and to enjoy snacks and freshly baked muffins by Greg's wife, Jenny. Into Lesotho, Greg took us to one village where we learnt about the culture of Basotho people: how they use blankets, how they bake bread, how they fuel fire, etc. This was a great experience for us. I strongly recommend people to put this tour in their bucket list, but make sure you let the experienced people like Greg drive you up the mountains so you can focus on enjoying the tour to the fullest.

An absolute amazing day with Greg. His knowledge was excellent, the vehicle was luxurious and expertly driven. We saw a part of Lesotho away from the tourism route and had a delicious traditional lunch. The home-baked muffins and cookies at our coffee stop half way up Sani Pass was perfectly timed. As the owners of South African Secrets bespoke travel company will be definitely recommending it to our guests.

Our private tour up the Sani Pass was amazing! Nathi is an awesome tour guide whose knowledge of the Pass, its history & abundant wildlife made this day really special for us. Angie was great in accommodating us at fairly short notice & her home-baked tea-time treats were divine. We'll certainly do this tour again!

We had the most amazing experience! Greg was awesome, we had such a good time with him! I would definitely recommend this experience 100%. We had our own private vehicle and it was the same price as other tours with loads of people. Greg even brought us home made muffins and cookies which we ate in no mans land which were really tasty! Beers and pizza at the top with the best views!

Greg took us up the Sani Pass as well as through the rural part of Lesotho for a visit to a local town. We were pleasantly surprised when Greg opened the boot of his 4x4 and showed us all the home made snacks his wife Angie prepared for us. We had a delicious lunch with a beautiful view and enjoyed coffee, cookies and muffins. Throughout the tour, Greg told us all about the Lesotho culture, nature and history on the Sani Pass and didn’t shy away from a good joke. His car was in excellent condition and his confident and patient driving made us feel very safe with him. We would absolutely recommend Sani Pass & Lesotho private tours as the efforts of Greg and Angie create a very personal and professional experience with value for money.

Greg gave us a really wonderful day trip tour up Sani Pass. He is very knowledgeable of the history of the area, from the geology and vegetation to the culture. He is a great storyteller which makes the environment come to life. He is very relaxed and friendly which put us very much at ease. Angie organized the most beautiful tea-time treats and added extra touches that made the day feel so luxurious and made us feel very special. We would absolutely recommend these guys for any tours. Their tours are excellent value for money and they put huge effort into making sure their clients are gaining a full experience. Thanks very much for making us some great memories!

Absolutely amazing from start to finish. From the moment of chatting to Angie to saying our good byes to David after spending the day going up Sani Pass and into Lesotho, it was very professionally done, and David is so knowledgeable about the area and answered all our questions we had even the crazy ones. We did the trip as a birthday surprise for my son and he loved every minute, the little gestures of cupcakes , balloons and sparkling wine added to making the day so special. The highlight was going into the village and the learning about the culture and tasting that amazing baked bread. Thank you to Angie and David for making the day ultra special. We would highly recommend Angie and her crew to take you into Lesotho, you will not be sorry!!! Thank you Angie & David.

We heard about Greg and Angie’s private tour company from our hotel. In the Covid-19 setting this was a perfect option for my family. It was our first time in the Southern Drakensberg and this was such a fantastic way to see the area and Sani pass.
The day was full of personal touches: bouquets on the seats, handmade biscuits and local stories from Greg. Although it was a misty day (which unfortunately obscured some of the views), the experience was still so memorable and misty weather shouldn’t deter you from doing a tour with Greg. Lesotho itself was a lovely place to experience: from a visit to Alina’s hut and a short history of Lesotho, to Africa’s highest pub (an absolute treat).
Covid 19: before crossing the South African border at the bottom of the pass, you have to pay a small fee to get swabbed for Covid. This only took about 15 minutes for our family of four. All other Covid-19 protocols were strictly adhered to and everyone in our family unit felt comfortable and safe throughout the whole day.
Thanks again Angie and Greg for such a wonderful, memorable experience!
