        Amazing experience!
My husband and I went on a weekend tour to Lesotho with Roof of Africa back in September. I am very late in writing this review but we had a wonderful and very unique experience on our tour with Roof of Africa that I have to share. The night before we were set to go there was a large snow storm, we were told a storm that large in September had not happened since 1997! Off the bat they were accommodating and helpful. Due to the snow we changed our pickup plan the night before and they did not hesitate to ensure we were safe and comfortable. Our guide, Sandile, was the hero of the weekend. He took every curve ball the weather threw at us in stride. Due to the weather we were unable to reach Emile for almost the entire weekend. Sandile worked with us to make sure we were comfortable with each modification we made to the original plan. When we reached Sani Pass we learned that, due to the snow, it was closed and we would not be able to drive through the border. Sandile worked tirelessly to reach Emile and was finally able to from The Highest Pub in Africa. We had a flight to catch very early the next day so it was imperative that we made it down Sani Pass that day. Sandile and Emile were able to work out a plan to get us down, they even worked with the border agents to ensure we were able to pass through the border. We were to walk the first 2 kilometers of the pass that was snowy and impassable by car and Emile would drive the 6 kilometers that was drivable and pick us up. Not only did he make it up higher than initially expected to meet us but he was able to make it to the top to open the pass for the other travelers waiting to drive down. Roof of Africa went more than above and beyond to make sure we had a wonderful time and made it back in time for our flight. We booked a tour through a different company (only because it’s in another part of Africa where Roof of Africa doesn’t operate) and the experience was nowhere near as good as we had with Roof of Africa so it’s safe to say their team is qualified and unique in their skills to ensure a safe and wonderful experience. It’s clear that they only hire the best which makes their tours well worth the price, my husband and I both work in customer service based jobs and we both felt like Sandile, Emile and the whole team cared about us and cared that we enjoyed our experience with them. They are an incredible team and we will most certainly book with them again given the opportunity.

Fantastic 4 day tour of Lesotho
Fantastic 4 day tour of Lesotho! It was just perfect, the country is so so beautiful, the kingdom of the skies indeed. Peter, our guide, was amazing, friendly, nice, and knowledgeable. We learnt so much! The accommodation was great, so was the itinerary. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to repeat?

Must visit - Mountain Kingdom in the Sky!
OMG! What a fantastic day in Lesotho with Roof of Africa Tours! I am gobsmacked by the beauty & history but also the promise of their future! Our guide, Mondli (or Mo) was top notch A++ 110% awesome! His knowledge of the local area of Underberg & Himeville along with his extensive insight on Lesotho & its people was so insightful. Even fauna & flora. So happy & helpful. The tour was tastefully done & opened up another world with visits to a local village including songs & crafts, sheep shearing station, bread / beer hut & delicious homemade lunch by the river. Cannot fault. Heartfelt thanks to Mo, Emile & Sandile for making it happen after a mishap with dual-citizenship passports….be sure to take the one stamped! Phew! Lesson learned! But WOW…a must do day trip…wish we had more time to enjoy & explore! It was truly a memory I will hold dear. Once again…TOP NOTCH! *****

        Spectacularly awesome!!
We did a custom trip from Underberg through Lesotho and returned through Sani Pass back to Himeville. It was a 5 day 4 night tour and it was fantastic!!!! Mondi and Peter were our guides and they surpassed even our highest hopes. They were always attentive to any needs we had and had extensive knowledge of the history, people, birds and plants that we saw. The entire trip was awesome and Emile and Britany were both very helpful and accommodating throughout the booking and execution of the trip. It is a trip of a lifetime that we HIGHLY recommend!

        Great informative tour of Lesotho
The #1 rating of this company is well deserved. I did the Lesotho Overnight tour from Durban to Mokhotlong. Had an amazing experience thanks in large part to my guide/driver Mondli who speaks Sesotho. Visited a mountain Basotho village, a traditional healer and chatted with mountain shepherds and local workers. I got the cultural experience I had sought and then some. I highly recommend this tour, specifically with Mondli, as he is well established and known to the locals. We traveled in a fantastic 4WD vehicle and stayed at the lovely El Paso Guesthouse (great room and restaurant meals).

Roof of Africa offered just what we were looking for in a Lesotho tour…and then some!
Roof of Africa’s owners (Emil and Britney) exceeded our tour expectations on all counts. We are two retired senior women who were curious about exploring Lesotho’s natural beauty, history and people at our own pace. From our first contact to our final day of the tour, Emil and Britney meticulously coordinated our trip development and tour progress. Other than the positive reviews we read on Trip Advisor, we knew next to nothing about Roof of Africa and Lesotho. But Emil worked patiently with us to develop a nine day Lesotho tour, with immediate and detail feedback to all our questions. The trip experience was greatly enhanced by our Guide Peter who opened our eyes to his country as he (safely) drove us around Lesotho. Peter, being a Lesotho native, served as a conversational conduit for us as we interacted with the people of Lesotho. Peter, with obviously no shortage of experience in “reading” tourists, discussed with us on a daily basis our activity and culinary preferences and options. He generously shared his impressive knowledge about Lesotho’s wildlife, history and people. The last two days of the tour we opted to luxuriate in a safari reserve going on exciting wildlife drives and eating dreamy meals. The Driver (sadly I don’t remember his name) gave us a very interesting Durban tour before driving us to our hotel in Underburg. Some of the Durban tour options initially appeared touristy to us but that did not end up being the case…Durban’s Phansi museum, Muthi trade market and the Mandela Capture Site Museum are not to be missed.

        Awesome experience!
We did a 4 day, 3 night tour of Lesotho and it was amazing! Our guide was Mondli (Mo). Mo was a very professional, punctual, knowledgeable guide and a skilled driver. We felt safe driving with him through the beautiful but rugged, very high, Sani Pass and other mountainous Lesotho terrain. He taught us a lot about the wildlife and the history and culture of the area and we enjoyed some interesting conversations. Mo also respected our needs and interests while still following the planned itinerary. The tour itself is definitely worthwhile and introduces one to the breathtaking landscape and unique culture of Lesotho. The accommodations and food were good , especially El Paso and our favorite, Semonkong with its cozy restaurant, delicious food and fireplaces in bedrooms. One thing to note, depending on where you begin and end your tour, drives can be quite long. They were longer than we had expected and if we had known we may have scheduled an overnight in Underberg as opposed to heading back to Durban which made for close to a nine hour drive. Also beware at the border! We had an issue with how our passport had been stamped (whether we had the correct visitors permit or not), which caused confusion and was an issue we had to deal with on the remainder of our trip.

Awesome mountain views, interesting fauna and a small peek into the lives of the Basotho people
The tour was great! The views were beautifully scenic. We passed through a smaller town and experienced a performance of Basotho women in a village. Our guide Mondli (or Moe) clearly explained the region's history and geography. We enjoyed him pointing out the flora and fauna along the way. We are especially impressed by his knowledge and bird spotting ability where he points out local and interesting species that we would have definitely missed.

We organized a bespoke 2 night/ 3 day birding tour with Roof of Africa from Durban to Underberg and up the Sani Pass into lesotho. Firstly, let me just say it was excellent: spectacular in terms of birding and landscapes. From the get go, Emile was extremely prompt and helpful in his replies and in planning out our perfect trip, which went through a few versions before finding the right itinerary. Our guide, Dr. Aldo Berruti, was one of the best guides we have ever had, with matchless knowledge not only about the birds and nature, but about all the geology and history of this stunning and fascinating region. He was also excellent company. We really had a fantastic time, seeing all the high altitude bird specials such as Drakensberg Rockjumper and Drakensberg Siskin, Ground Woodpecker, Mountain Pipit, and Lammergeier, as well as several unique mammal species such as Sloggett's Ice Rat and Grey Rhebuck. We also had fantastic birding on the way to and around Underberg, seeing the endangered blue swallow, as well as all thee species of Southern African cranes. Plus, the scenery throughout our tour was just unbelievable. Roof of Africa Tours is extremely professional and accommodating and I would highly recommend them for whatever tour you have in mind. The lodging and food was all lovely and Emile even went out of his way while driving back to Durban to stop in Mtunzini to look for Mangrove Kingfisher. What a fantastic tour!

What a glorious day on the Sani Pass tour with Peter as our guide, and it was an unforgettable experience! Peter was an amazing host, going above and beyond to ensure our family of five, including two elderly members (one with a walking frame), felt welcome and comfortable throughout the tour.

His knowledge and passion for the region's history, culture, and natural beauty were impressive, and he presented it in a way that was engaging and easy to understand. Peter's patience and kindness towards our elderly family members were particularly noteworthy, making sure they could fully participate and enjoy the tour without feeling rushed or left behind.

The scenery, of course, was breathtaking, and Peter's expertise brought it all to life. We couldn't have asked for a better guide or a more enjoyable experience. Highly recommend this tour and Peter as your guide! 5 stars isn't enough - we'd give it 10 stars if we could!

What an experience! Our family had such a special time. The weather was misty and rainy and made for beautiful scenery and nostalgic imagery. Our guide for the Sani Pass tour Emile was so knowledgeable about the history of the land, people and wildlife it helped make a very special memory for us all.

An amazing trip on Saturday from the time we as a family were picked up from our Cottage in Underberg until the time we were dropped back at our Cottage. Peter our guide was really professtional, explaining what the trip would entail as we had first-timers in our family group. He was always pointing out different types of Birds, Vultures and plants and flowers along the way. His talk at the village on how the peope of Lesotho wear their blankets and how they cook was very interesting, p;us more. The two kids we had in our group really took to Peter and were asking questions along the way both up and down the pass, plus whilst at the Village.

Today my family and I did the Sani Pass tour with our guide Tsebo. We had a great time despite the misty cold and rainy weather. Tsebo had so much to share and was very happy to answer our many questions. He was also very skilled at spotting birds and several animals we encountered along the way. He told us that despite the rain in South Africa that the weather may be clear in Lesotho and he was right! We found a bit of sun at the top. Very informative visit to a village and then a fun lunch at the Highest Bar in Africa. We never felt the slightest concern for our safety with Tsebo’s excellent driving skills. I highly recommend for families. .

Amazing day trip to the Sani Pass from Himeville and into Lesotho. The views were just spectacular, the drive up the twisty dirt road very exciting, and we got to learn a lot about the Lesotho culture and people. And let's not forget a nice lunch in the highest pub of Africa! Our guide Sandile was an excellent driver, who always made us feel safe and taken care of.

What an amazing time we had with Roof Top of Africa Tours. Our guide, Peter, made the whole experience unforgettable.

The 6 hr tour kicked off at 9:15 AM and finished at 3:15 PM. They picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel, which was so convenient. We paid adult price for our 4-year-old son to guarantee a private tour, and it was totally worth it! The Sani Pass transit was incredible, and we got some awesome photo stops along the way. We even found some snow to play in!

We visited a Basotho village and tried out the local beer and homemade bread. Peter was full of interesting stories and made the cultural experience so much fun.

Lunch at the Highest Pub in Africa had breathtaking views. The menu options were a bit limited due to may items being out of stock. We didn't get a chance to have the included tea and coffee break, but that did not detract from our overall experience. Highly recommended.

Our guide Mo was a really great guide. He explained a lot about Lesotho, the people and their way of life. We visited a village where ladies showed us some traditional dance and singing, traditional clothing.. Ofcourse we got to try it on as well.
The way to the village was a little bit difficult for my mother in law to walk.. climbing up a steep hill, she's not so young anymore. But the people where lovely.
The Sani Pass is beautiful and a real adventure.
I would recommend it for sure, and take Mo along😉

This is a must do trip. The scenery, the experience and the service from "Roof of Africa tours" was brilliant.
I was expecting a gravel track up a steep incline/decline but what I experienced was true 4x4 adventure. It was a track, it was a river bed, sometimes it just looked like the cliff face but our vehicle continued upwards and onwards. Note: it's a paved road up to the ZA border and the actual pass is just dirt, made, gravel, boulders and cliff drops with jaw breaking views if weather permits.
Our guide was passionate about this area, about this road and gave me a new place to love in Africa.
Make sure you do this trip ASAP before this little piece of historical Africa is paved away under a modern road

We heard about this trip from friends just a couple days ago and they really recommend it. So we spontaneously decided to book it.... Not really knowing what to expect, we set off. My oh my were we in for a great time! We Had a fantastic Guide, who knew the track by Heart. He also stopped for a lot of great scenic views (and literally every bend is breath taking) and told us about the Wildlife, the culture, the history. The stop at the village was really educational and a great experience to learn about Lesotho life.

All in all, this was absolutely wonderful and we will tell all our friends and family about this amazing adventure.
Thank you so much for these memories!
