Cape Town Central - Inhambane Province

Shockingly poor service from this airline!!! Speaking as somebody who has travelled regularly across African countries for the past 20 years - I can honestly say that I have never experienced anything even approaching our experience with LAM. Having booked and paid for our tickets from Cape Town to Inhambane (family holiday to Tofo) months ahead of time, we were told when arriving at the airport that the airline had overbooked the flight from Maputo to Inhambane and that there were no seats for our family, which included our two young children. This meant that we had to stay the night in Maputo and miss a day of our holiday in Tofo. Despite obviously having several well meaning employees, LAM have sabotaged operations by having completely outdated systems - it took us over 40 minutes to pay for our surfboard (extra luggage) at Cape Town airport. In the run up to our trip to Mozambique, we were constantly bombarded with emails and text messages saying that 'for operational reasons, your flight has been rescheduled to xyz....' - when it became obvious that the flights could no longer connect from Maputo to Inhambane due the airlines changes, we attempted to contact LAM customer service without success - absolute tumbleweeds!!! The check-in procedure at every LAM flight is really like watching paint dry and capable of stretching the sense of humor of even the most patient among us... indicative of this level of service is that the international flight from Maputo to Cape Town, which takes place over dinner time, is graced with a service of Simba chips (crisps) - no sign of dinner whatsoever. Having been quite excited to discover that LAM flew directly from Cape Town to Maputo, we would be seriously hesitant to repeat this experience despite the favourable flight routing. I cannot see how this airline will survive as a commercial entity if they continue along the current path.

Beira - Maputo
Domestic
Saturday afternoon flight from Maputo to Beira was delayed with 5 hours for a past midnight arrival, which is not the end of the world. Friday morning return flight was a nightmare however. Got to the airport early for the 8:40 flight to Maputo to catch my return flight to Lusaka a couple hours after arrival. We were told that the Beira-Maputo flight was delayed and hung around the airport all day without any follow up info - staff were rude and unhelpful. Departure time kept stretching out and finally the plane arrived, we were told we would fly out at 20:30. When boarding was about to start I was called to the front and told to wait one side. They took my boarding pass, the plane boarded and I was told to go back to the checkin area and to wait there and that the supervisor would come sort things out. The plane boarded and left without me - no explanation, no further information. I guess they overbooked the plane and me and one other passenger were left stranded. We were told we would get accommodation and meals, and hung around the airport for another hour before someone took us to a dodgy hotel after 10pm. Saturday morning - no info given on next flight. After midday we were told the next flight is that same evening and that we would be collected from the hotel at 6pm. When nobody arrived to collect us I called the LAM supervisor who told me this flight was cancelled, with no info for any flights on Sunday. Finally flew to Maputo on Sunday morning and onwards to Lusaka. In my experience the LAM staff are the rudest I've ever come across. And there was a clear air of discrimination against me as an english speaker. The fact that my boarding pass was taken from me and given to passengers who arrived after me is unacceptable. This was a business trip and our company adapted its policy regarding travel to Mozambique after this experience. This airline has no business flying commercially and should be shut down. Disgusted with LAM, never, ever again.

After reading the reviews I regretted booking and really dreaded my flights (Lisbon to Maputo and Maputo to Johannesburg) but everything went just fine. Both flights left on time, staff was kind, the entertainment system worked (not much choice though) and the food was okay. My transfer in Maputo also went well, though it was a bit unclear where to go and if I should collect my suitcases and check them in again or not. I was kindly assisted and they asssured me I didnt't have to do anything. Both suitcases arrived in Johannesburg.

There is nothing more embarrassing than never knowing what time... or sometimes even what day you will arrive at your destination! The consequences can be dramatic for certain passengers. The nature of the snacks on board, the constant delays, the lack of information and of excuses, ... all this is not worthy of a national airline but more of a charter company!
